Planning Your Session

Choosing a location
It's easy to think you need the "perfect" location for beautiful photos, but what matters most is lighting and trusting me to see each space through a creative perspective. Some of my favorite images have been captured in the simplest places because beautiful photos are about so much more than the backdrop.
Think about the overall feel you want your photos to have, and I'll help you choose a location that brings your vision to life. To help you get started, I've put together a guide to some of my most popular and requested senior session locations!

Don't see exactly what you're looking for? This guide is just a starting point! If you or a family member has access to a beautiful property or a place that's meaningful to you, let me know. I'd be happy to explore it as a potential location for your session.
Outfits
One of the most common questions I get from seniors is, "What should I wear for my session?"
The truth is, what you wear plays a big role in the overall feel of your photos. While the best outfits are always the ones that are most like you, a little planning can go a long way. Thoughtful outfit choices can add variety, complement your location, and help create a gallery that feels cohesive and personal.
Here are a few tips to help you choose outfits you'll feel confident in and love looking back on for years to come!
Movement Adds Magic
One of my favorite recommendations is incorporating at least one outfit with movement. Flowy dresses and skirts photograph beautifully because they add dimension, motion, and variety to your photos. Whether you're twirling, walking, or simply standing in a breeze, movement helps create images that feel natural and dynamic. You definitely don't have to wear a dress, but if that's your style, it's something to consider!
Don't Neglect Nails
Your hands show more in photos than you may realize. You'll be touching your hair, holding your cap, adjusting your outfit, showing off your class ring, and interacting naturally throughout the session. Freshly painted nails or a clean manicure can make a big difference in the final images.

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize
Similar to nails, accessories are often the detail that pulls an outfit together (especially for those close detail shots!). Simple necklaces, bracelets, ring stacks, and earrings can add personality and polish without distracting from you. My biggest recommendation is to choose pieces you genuinely love and wear regularly rather than something that feels forced or trendy.

Don't Be Afraid of Color
Your senior session is the perfect excuse to have a little fun with your outfits! While neutrals can be beautiful, don't be afraid to incorporate color into your looks. Bold, vibrant colors often photograph incredibly well and can bring so much life and personality to your gallery. Look for colors that complement your hair, eyes, and skin tone and make you feel confident. Jewel tones, bright blues, greens, pinks, purples, and other vibrant shades tend to photograph beautifully.

Bring Meaningful Props
Props aren't required, but they can be a great way to make your session feel more personal. Some ideas include:

- Your cap and gown
- College acceptance gear
- Sports equipment
- Musical instruments
- Books
- Letterman jacket
- Flowers
- A pet
- Anything that reflects your hobbies, interests, or future plans
Session Day Expectations

Before Your Session:
We’ll set up a Zoom call 1–2 weeks before your session to go over all the details and make sure I’m as prepared as possible! A few days before your session, I'll check in to confirm all the details and keep an eye on the weather. If the forecast calls for heavy rain or severe weather, we'll work together to find a new date that works for everyone.
Please plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early so we can start on time and make the most of our session. For outdoor photos, timing is everything! We plan your session around the best natural light, so even a short delay can mean less time with those soft, glowy conditions. Keeping me in the loop helps everything run smoothly, and I'm always happy to answer any questions you have before your session.
I also recommend packing a small bag with a few essentials, like a comfortable pair of shoes for walking between locations, a portable fan for warm days, a sweater or jacket for cooler weather, water, and any touch-up items you may want throughout the session.
During Your Session:
Once we meet, we'll make a quick game plan for the session, including the order of your outfits and the easiest spots to change (since many locations don't have a public restroom, most outfit changes happen in the car!). We'll also decide which outfits work best at each location based on the scenery, lighting, and overall look we're going for. My goal is to keep everything as smooth and efficient as possible so we can spend more time taking photos and less time worrying about logistics.
If you're feeling a little nervous when we start, you're definitely not alone! One of the first things I typically hear from seniors is, "I have no idea how to pose," and that's completely okay. You don't need any modeling experience or even know what to do with your hands. That's my job! Throughout your session, I'll guide you with prompts and poses that feel natural and flattering. I want you to feel comfortable, confident, and to actually have fun! I promise I won't make you do anything that feels awkward or unlike you, and if you have an idea or a pose you've been wanting to try, tell me!
Think of our session like hanging out with a friend while I happen to have a camera in my hand. We'll chat, laugh, explore, and have a good time together. Eventually, the nerves will fade and you’ll just be enjoying yourself!
After Your Session:
After your session, I’ll go through and carefully edit your images so they look their very best. I don’t heavily alter anything physical in photos, aside from small things like removing flyaway hairs or distractions in the background. My focus is really on color, light, and making sure everything feels polished and bright. Editing is a huge part of my craft, and I take the time to make sure your gallery feels cohesive and something you’re excited to share and look back on.
Your full gallery will be delivered to your email in 2 weeks, ready to download, share, and enjoy! If you share your images on social media, please be sure to tag or credit me - it means so much and really helps others find me :). I also ask that final images aren’t re-edited or filtered, but you’re always welcome to reach out if you’d like any re-edits or adjustments.
FAQ
Can I bring someone with me?
Absolutely! A parent, sibling, or friend is welcome to come along. Just keep in mind that too many people can sometimes make it harder to stay focused, so I recommend bringing someone who helps you feel comfortable and confident.
Do you travel for photoshoots outside of Austin?
Absolutely! I love exploring new locations and am happy to travel for your session. For locations more than 30 miles outside of Austin, a travel fee of $1/mile will apply. If you have a spot in mind, just let me know and we can plan from there!
How far in advance should I book my session?
I recommend booking as soon as you know you want photos! Popular seasons like spring and fall tend to fill up quickly, so booking early gives you the most options for dates and locations.
What time of day is best for photos?
The best lighting is usually during golden hour—the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. This gives us that soft, warm glow you see in many of my images, along with more even light and less harsh shadows. If our session falls on a heavily overcast day, I may recommend adjusting our session time so we can make the most of the available light.
