One of the most common questions I get from seniors is, "What should I wear for my session?"

The truth is, what you wear plays a big role in the overall feel of your photos. While the best outfits are always the ones that feel most like you, a little planning can go a long way. Thoughtful outfit choices can add variety, complement your location, and help create a gallery that feels cohesive, personal, and true to who you are. Here are a few tips to help you choose outfits you'll feel confident in and love looking back on for years to come!

Movement Adds Magic

One of my favorite recommendations is incorporating at least one outfit with movement. Flowy dresses and skirts photograph beautifully because they add dimension, motion, and variety to your photos. Whether you're twirling, walking, or simply standing in a breeze, movement helps create images that feel natural and dynamic. You definitely don't have to wear a dress, but if that's your style, it's something to consider!

Don't Neglect Nails

Your hands show up more in photos than most people realize. You'll be touching your hair, holding your diploma, adjusting your cap, showing off your class ring, and interacting naturally throughout the session. Freshly painted nails or a clean, neutral manicure can make a big difference in the final images.

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize

Similar to nails, accessories are often the detail that pulls an outfit together (especially for those close detail shots!). Simple necklaces, bracelets, ring stacks, and earrings can add personality and polish without distracting from you. My biggest recommendation is to choose pieces you genuinely love and wear regularly rather than something that feels forced or trendy.

Bring Meaningful Props

Props aren't required, but they can be a great way to make your session feel more personal.

Some ideas include:

  • Your cap and gown
  • College acceptance gear
  • Sports equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Books
  • Letterman jacket
  • Flowers
  • A pet
  • Anything that reflects your hobbies, interests, or future plans

Most Importantly: Wear What Feels Like You

At the end of the day, the best outfits are the ones that make you feel confident, comfortable, and most like yourself. Trends come and go, but your senior photos should reflect who you are during this exciting season of life. These are the photos that will end up on your family's walls, in graduation announcements, and become keepsakes of a season that passes by so quickly, so choose pieces that feel true to your personality and that you'll love looking back on for years to come. And if you're stuck between options, I'm always happy to help you choose outfits that fit your vision, location, and personal style!
